Listen to the interview with Ryan Oksenhorn, founder of CarTunes.

About CarTunes

CarTunes is the freshest iOS music player, designed entirely for touch. Control your music with swipes, taps, and pinches. CarTunes is ideal for listening to music anytime! At the gym, on the road, or lying in bed.

With more than 1 million downloads, CarTunes is a #1 App internationally! Rated ★★★★★ by hundreds of reviewers! See what everyone’s raving about:

♪ Controlling your music couldn’t be easier!
– Full gesture control
– Tap anywhere to play & pause music
– Flick to change tracks
– Slide to change volume
– Pull down to instantly tweet
– Two-finger flick to shuffle
– Slide to seek forward and backward
– Pinch to play current song’s album or artist

Where did the idea come from?

As Ryan was driving he noticed how difficult it was to control the music player with its tiny buttons. He thought wouldn’t it be cool if there was a completely gesture-based music player.

At this time, Ryan still didn’t know how to code in Objective-C.

Why CarTunes became a BIG hit

During the first few months of its launch, CarTune was generating a few hundred downloads a month, but it was generating 5-star ratings. Ryan knew he was on to something.

He continued to update the app every few weeks based on how he was using. During this time, he kept it free and only decided to charge when he replaced the music app with CarTunes (3-4 months since launch).

How Ryan Built a Facebook Community with Over 10,000 Fans

From the very beginning, he created a Facebook page for CarTunes where he interacted with his users. He got a ton of feedback from his users and every time he used a suggestion, he would mention the person in the update notes of the app which allowed him to build and grow his fan base.

Founder at AppMasters
I started building apps in 2011 and my first app hit #8 under educational games. I started making a few hundred dollars a month, but had no idea what I was doing. Then in 2013 I decided to start a podcast so I could pick the brains of app creators that I admired including the co-founder of Shazam, Tapbots, Crossy Road, etc and that changed everything.

Now I run an app marketing agency where we’ve helped 28 clients get featured by Apple, 5X downloads with ASO, and get coverage on Techcrunch, Mashable, Venture Beat and other major publications. I also write about apps on The Next Web, Entrepreneur.com, and on my blog AppMasters.co.
